SDT Budget Set to Rise by 25% Amid Surge in Disciplinary Cases

According to Legal Futures, the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT) is set for a 25% budget increase in 2025, rising from £2.5 million to £3.1 million, in response to a spike in cases referred by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). This funding boost, sourced from practising fees paid by solicitors, will support an expected 300 sitting days, up from 260 in 2024, as cases have surged by 50% over the past eight months. The SDT has also issued a warning that its budget may need to rise further in 2026, with prosecutions linked to high-profile cases such as the Axiom Ince collapse and the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry on the horizon. While this year’s increase is notable, it aligns with pre-2024 funding levels, as 2024’s budget was unusually low following a one-off £1.2 million expense for a tribunal relocation.
